What Camera Do You Use?

A question that fills many photographers Dms, harmless and inquisitive.

I shoot with a Nikon d850 mostly, sometimes a Nikon Zfc if I am feeling like something different. One of my favourite photos I shoot on a little Cannon EOS 1500.

Taking a 'good' image is about the creative not the camera.

The image above is shot on my Nikon D850, after my little brother found it in the car, I had previously been shooting in similar conditions meaning the exposure was correct. After a few attempts to take a photo he exclaims "this camera is shit all the photos are blurry" typical back button focus catching people off guard.

The same camera that I shoot some of my best photos with he couldn't get to focus.

When an aspiring photographer asks what camera I would recommend I struggle, I prefer Nikon, my first ever DSLR was Nikon so thats all I know. Picking up any other brand is like a whole new language. I would buy 500 more D850's if I could, I absolutely love it however someone who is starting out and does not 100% understand f'stop, ISO and shutter speed may struggle.

My tip is to find a budget, if you have never picked up a camera spending 5k might be a lot, try looking at the smaller DSLR's. A Nikon d7500 is a step down from the d850 but still an amazing camera. A Nikon d5600 is a perfect first camera that will help get your creative style blooming.

Whatever camera you decide to purchase you may choose a Cannon or even a mirrorless just make sure you use it often. Fall in love with telling stories through images, fall in love with the memories you are creating and fall in love with the art of it all together. Practice makes perfect.

A camera is much tougher then you think so don't be afraid to take it out of the box and use it. A camera sitting in the cupboard is loosing you potential. Recently I dropped my d850 out of the car onto a gravel road. Picking it up I thought it was all fine until I noticed it had crushed the frame around the ISO button meaning I was unable to change my important settings. In the kitchen I found the pointiest butchers knife and chiseled out the frame to release the button. Angry at myself for not taking more care I continued to snap the night away.

I have my d850 out in the yards getting a nice coat of dust during the day and use the air compressor to get the dust off at home. The images I take during this time are always a favourite. Many of the horse images people LOVE my camera had just been pulled out of a bucket of feed on the back of a buggy. I blow the crumbs off the lens and snap away before it gets thrown back in the buggy for the afternoon.
